Welcome to my blog! I hope you are safe and doing well. It is summertime! During this period a lot of people are going on vacation, like myself. Those who read my background stories know that my family never went on vacation. And I know that there are people that choose to not go on vacation, people that can’t go on vacation, or like my family in the past, people who are not allowed to go on vacation.
Even though my family didn’t go on vacation, we still had an amazing summertime. Today I will be sharing some of the things we did during our summers. I will be sharing those in chronological order because we moved 3 times and lived in different areas.
- Play in our front yard
I was born in the summer of 1996. Until 2000 we lived in a village in a small house with only one bedroom. We had a big front and back yard. My older brother and I enjoyed playing in our front yard. Our neighbors would also play with us very often. We had the best times of our life. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but we really enjoyed ourselves. We enjoyed the weather, each other’s company and of course some ice cream. As a kid, I didn’t need much to be entertained.
- Going to the beach
In that first house we lived in, we lived very close to the beach. All we had to do was cross the road and walk through the dunes. So my family would go to the beach very often in the summer. My mom would pack some food and we would spend an afternoon at the beach. We had so much fun. My father would try to teach us how to swim. A lot of times people would be riding horses at the beach, which really fascinated me. Even now, I still love going to the beach. I have a really special connection with the sea that I can’t explain. Anyway, my family really enjoyed going to the beach.
- Riding our bikes
In The Netherlands, we ride our bikes on a daily basis. For instance, I used my bike to go to high school, practice, my job, etc. We start riding our bikes at a very young age. During the summer, when we were little, we would go outside to ride our bikes. In this way, we would keep practicing and enjoying the weather at the same time.
- Kite running
At some point, kite running was a trend in The Netherlands. When I was three years old my parents took me and my brother to the store to buy kite runners. They bought my brother a nice beautiful colorful kite runner. And they bought me an ugly purple plastic thing in a shape of an airplane. It broke the very next day. They probably thought that I didn’t understand because I was only three. I actually confronted my mom about this last year and she apologized lol. But it’s all good.
We would fly my brother’s kite runner everywhere. Well, I would only watch, my father and brother would actually do the work. We would fly it in our back yard, at the beach, in different parks, etc.
In 2000 we moved to house number 2, where we met a lot of kids. Those kids would fly their kite runners as well. One day we all went to the park and all those kids were flying their kite runners. I was 4 years old at that time. There was a kid who needed to tie his laces, so he gave his kite runner to me. I think you can guess what happened. I almost flew away. Maybe that’s the reason my parents didn’t buy me a nice big kite runner like my brother’s. But I really enjoyed watching all those kite runners in the sky. I ended up flying a kite runner together with another kid who was the same age as me. Together we didn’t fly away.
In September 2000 my little brother was born. Now there were three of us.
- Free kids activities
In 2001, we moved to house number 3. We lived in a city for the first time. We are currently living in the same city but in a different house. When we lived in house number 3, there would be free kids’ activities every summer, which we attended. There were a lot of fun things to do and we were also able to win some prizes.
- Going to parks
In house number 3 we lived close to a lot of big parks. My parents would take us to those parks. We would always go for walks and then sit somewhere. We enjoyed nature and ate some snacks that we packed.
- Water fights
In 2004 we moved to house number 4, which is the house we are currently living in. We have a big backyard which is shared with everyone who lives in our building. We used to play there with all the other kids from our building. Sometimes we all would bring our water guns and have a water fight. This was also a great way to cool down during the hot summer days. Besides water fights, we would also play a lot of other games. We had a good time together.
These are 7 activities that my family used to do during the summer. These activities were basically free. Sometimes we had to make a one-time purchase and that’s about it.
Since I am always open and honest on my blog I am going to admit that sometimes I was upset that my family and I couldn’t go on vacation. I always heard these amazing stories from my friends and classmates. I had a really strong desire to know what life looked like in other countries. Little did I know that later I would go to all these amazing countries with my high school. I am so grateful for that. Of course, I am also grateful for all the amazing memories I made in the summers here in The Netherlands.
As a teenager, I spend my summers working, playing basketball, and hanging out with my friends. I played basketball almost every single day. I really miss those days.
Now that I am an adult and earn my own money, I do go on trips and vacations, but not for too long. I only go for about a week and then I spend the rest of my summer here in The Netherlands. Even as an adult I am still enjoying my summers here. I just hang out with my friends. We go to the beach, go out to eat, have a barbeque or picnic. My friends and I have the nicest memories together.
I also have to mention that since I am a working woman I don’t have those 6 weeks of summer vacations anymore. Last year I took 2 weeks off I think. This summer I only took 1 week off. At first, I thought it would bother me, but it actually isn’t that bad. I was running out of summer ideas anyway lol. Because I am working I am not outside spending all my money at McDonald’s. As a teenager, my friends and I spend a lot of money eating out. I’m so happy that I made an end to those habits.
This is all I have for today. Thank you for your precious time and until next time.
